Perks and Benefits: “We offer 100% paid health care, a generous dental plan, 401(k) with company match and paid vacations and paid maternity leave. But the benefit everyone talks the most about is our monthly company lunches to celebrate company anniversaries and birthdays. I also like to surprise everyone and come in early before our shop starts at 6:00 a.m. to make banana split pancakes and have them ready when they arrive. They often take photos and send them out to others. We have a theatre-style popcorn machine and a constant supply of popcorn for whomever wants to make it. Even though we have a fully air conditioned screen print shop (the only one in Arizona), we keep the freezer stocked with ice cream and popsicles all summer long. We give surprise paid days off for outstanding effort.”

Company Culture: “We are very focused on company culture. We have worked together as a team to intentionally define the type of culture we want to have as well as the principles that guide how we work with each other. These are printed on a cup that every employee has and uses daily. When we hire new people, the receptionist greets them and talks to them a little bit. They don’t realize it but they are actually being assessed by whether they treat all people with respect. The receptionist informs the interviewers of her experience. Next they are given a tour by someone who would work with them. They are assessing interest in the company, their attitude toward others and cultural fit. They report back to the interview team. Then they go through a series of interviews to determine if they are a good cultural fit. Skills can be trained – but not passion, attitude and teamwork. Jobs are created to fit the skills and whatever each employee excels at. We are constantly adjusting job descriptions to increase employee satisfaction, but with a focus on making sure the customer is happy.”

Recent Culture Initiatives: “We had several new employees join our company, so we gathered everyone together to discuss the vision of the company and where we see the company going in the next five years. Everyone participated with their thoughts of how we can be the best possible company, what we might change or enhance to make our customers happier, how we can work together better. It has totally changed the way we work and we have found that everyone becomes a team player or they choose to leave on their own accord.” – Kathy Thomas, owner.
